Technical staff of a film is a group of people hired by a film company, for the purpose of making a film or motion picture. Technical staff are distinguished from the actors who appear in front of the camera or provide voices for characters in the film. Technical staff are also distinct from the production staff, consisting of producers, managers and company representatives.
Communication between production and technical staff generally passes through the director and his/her staff of assistants. Technical staff are generally divided into departments with well defined hierarchies and standards for interaction and cooperation between the departments. Other than acting, techincal staff handle everything including costumes, shooting, sound, lights, sets and special effects. Camera operators, lighting technicians, microphone boom operators, property masters, recordists, sound editors, special effects persons are a few examples of technical staff.
